A recent decision of Egypt Communication Sector has opened the way for the option of a third mobile telephone license yet has created different reactions varying from calculated optimism on the one side to expressed cautious and/ or pessimism on the other side. While NTRA – National Telecommunication Regulatory Agency said it guarantees a fair market share for the new company (as announced by Eng. Alaa Fahmy, NTRA Chairman), top executives of both Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt have expressed a conservative welcome to the development yet they are awaiting for the detailed conditions. Other observers expressed difference in views towards NTRA final report on the issue attributing their concept to a weak purchasing power, which may affect projected revenues in the said report. Still most parties agreed to the fact that beneficiary number one is the end user. On his side, Deputy Chairman of Telecom Egypt, Mr. Aly Salama, was quoted indicating his company is financially ready to participate in the auction. Meanwhile media reports indicated that the consortium, which has earlier applied for the third license groups ZTE, of China, Qualcom, known for its CDMA services, Teletech, business partner of Lucent Technologies in Egypt and a strategic Canadian partner among others.
