Egypt Minister of Water Resources & Irrigation said cooperation with the World Bank is progressing in search for alternative surface irrigation resources for West Delta areas, particularly for farms & projects along both sides of Cairo/ Alex Desert Road which could no more depend on underground water resources. The Minister indicated that the scheme provides for the digging & operation of a new 3 - branches canal to carry water from Rashid Nile Branch to irrigate 200,000 feddans under partial contribution of concerned investors. At present a survey is being conducted among interested farmers & investors to determine their needs, since such needs would affect the design & operation of the canal & its branches which will serve them [only]. Subscribers to the scheme would be charged an annual minimum fee per feddans against the annual supply of 5,700 M3 of surface irrigation water, for 18 years, apart from further fee on actually consumed water. Project would be further backed by receipts from selling other 100,000 feddans to investors to also benefit from the canal and its branches. Project studies, surveys & mapping of actual present plantations are proceeding under World Bank funding. |
