GAFI – General Authority for Investment & Free Zones has recently endorsed a 25 / 75 Egyptian Indian project getting license to implement $ 350 million project in Edfou, in Asswan Governorate to produce phosphoric acid. Involved are state owned El Nasr Mining Co., holding 25 % shares and Evico Co. of India holding 75 % shares. Project would operate as a private free zone. Works on the project are scheduled to start by March 2006 obviously after completing the project environmental assessment, which was assigned to the Environmental Studies Center at the Faulty of Engineering, of Cairo University. Project output, phosphoric acid, is deemed a major input for different industries including the compounded phosphate fertilizers, the sugar industry and the industrial detergents. Project targets to export up to one million tons via El Hamrawin Port on the Red Sea. Chairman of El Nasr Mining Co., Eng. Abdel Malek Farah, said his company would supply the project its requirements of raw phosphate.
